Recordings are in public domain, when their copyright
term has expired. In most European countries this term is 70 years after the
first publication. In the US this is a lot more complicated due to a complexity
of Federal and State Law, so there are hardly any sound recordings in public
domain in the US. It's also important to know that if a work falls within the
Public Domain, only that exact version is not protected under copyright law.
Other people may have created arrangements of that work that ARE under
copyright. Always do your research!
